‘Sweeney Todd’ coming to Bucyrus

Bucyrus Little Theatre invites audiences to 19th-century London this October to witness the on-stage horror of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11-13 and Oct. 18-19 with matinee performances beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 and 20.

Tickets go on sale to the public on Monday, Sept. 23, and can be purchased at www.bucyruslittletheatre.com. Please note that this show contains mature language, themes and gore. Parental discretion is advised.

“I can’t think of a better way to get into the spirit of Halloween than to come out to see this show,” said Abbey Kanellakis, president of the Bucyrus Little Theatre Board of Directors. “This is not an easy show to produce by any means. But the talent and passion this cast has brought to our stage has been spectacular. Audiences will certainly not leave disappointed.”

The full-length musical thriller, directed by Cheri Laughbaum, features more than 20 talented cast members as they set to work bringing this infamous tale to life. Sweeney Todd, played by Scott Smith, is an unjustly exiled barber who is in search of vengeance against the lecherous Judge Turpin, played by Joe Trolian, who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, played by Mindy Tishue, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of a new ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up for more.

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is written by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler and is presented through a special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI).

Those who would like to reserve their seats earlier than Sept. 23, can do so by becoming a member of Bucyrus Little Theatre. In addition to receiving at least one ticket for each performance during the 2024-25 season, members are also offered the opportunity to reserve seats one week before tickets go on sale to the general public.
