The Galion Community Band recently announced rehearsal and concert dates for this summer. Rehearsals will be on June 9, June 23, June 30, July 14, July 21 and July 28. All of these Sunday rehearsals will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held at the band room of the Galion High School.

The concert dates are Saturday, July 6, at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 4 at 3 p.m. These concerts will be held in the pavilion of the First United Church of Christ at 248 Harding Way West in Galion. These concerts are free to the public, with a free will donation being requested. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and come enjoy these concerts featuring talented local musicians.

The July 6 concert will celebrate the Fourth of July with a great patriotic concert. The concert will also feature the Galion Community Chorus. The band and chorus will recognize all veterans at this concert.

The Aug. 4 concert will be dedicated to Lew Friend, a 1978 Galion graduate whose music career took him to the Army Band and to Ashland University. He recently retired from teaching. Friend was active with the Community Band from its inception and has played with many of the area’s big bands and performing ensembles.

The Galion Community Band is open to all area musicians. Last year’s band had community members with experience in various military bands as well as students from Galion, Crestline, Northmor, Colonel Crawford and Clear Fork.

“We hope to see a great turnout from students of surrounding schools to join with us to play a challenging summer program,” said organizer Brian Treisch. The band is always looking for more woodwind players. If anyone has questions, they can call Treisch at 419-566-5326.

The Galion Community Band began in 1976 and has played almost every summer since. Support for this year’s band comes from the Galion Community Foundation, Metronome Music, Bill and Marilyn Stepro, Schneider Funeral Home, H. R. Wolf Hardware, the Galion Kiwanis and Phil’s Deli. Additional support is provided by the Galion City Schools.
