Northmor alumna leads offense for Beavers
BLUFFTON – The Bluffton University softball team split a set of games with the Calvin College Knights on Saturday. The Beavers dropped game one, 12-4, but rallied in the sixth to take the nightcap, 3-2. Bluffton’s record stays even at 10-10, while Calvin College now sits at 9-5.
Northmor alumna Kelsey Reeder of Galion led the offense for the Beavers, notching two hits, a run, and an RBI. Ashley Knippen of Wapakoneta also added a hit and an RBI in the victory.
Bluffton’s scoring began in the second inning with a two bagger off the bat of Mackenzie Schmidt of Caledonia. The lead was 3-1 heading into the fifth frame, but the Beaver bats caught fire. A dropped fly with Jessie Madzia of Massillon at the dish plated Knippen and Reeder pushed home Madzia, giving Bluffton a 4-3 lead heading into the sixth.
Makenzie Schmidt led the bats for the Beavers, notching two hits and one RBI, while Knippen and Reeder also tallied an RBI apiece.
The nightcap saw Bluffton take their first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 3-2 victory. Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings.
A double by Schmidt sent Knippen to third before she crossed the plate on a bunt single from Reeder, giving Bluffton its first lead of the game and sealing their eventual victory.
The Beavers return to action on Tuesday in a home matchup against the Olivet Comets.
Colonel Crawford alumnus takes second in discuss
ROCKHILL, S.C. – Ashland University sophomore (and Colonel Crawford alumni) Clayton Jury took second in the in the men’s discus throw at 48.96 meters/160-feet-7 3/4 at the ADIDAS Winthrop Invitational on Saturday.
Ashland’s men and women finished the opening weekend of outdoor action with two automatic and 11 provisional efforts for nationals.
The Eagles will attend the Wooster Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Special Olympians place in bowling tourney
BUCYRUS – The Fairway-Waycraft Chargers sent 4 bowlers to compete in the Area 5 Bowling Tournament that took place at Heritage Lanes Family Center in Tiffin, Ohio on Thursday, March 24th. The bowlers competed in different divisions based on their entry scores and bowled 2 games.
Peggy Benedict competed in Division 3 and finished with a score of 146, which resulted in a 3rd Place finish in her division. Kendra Keesee competed in Division 4 and finished with a score of 85, which resulted in a 6th Place finish in her division. Nate Metzger competed in Division 10 and finished with a score of 161, which resulted in a 4th Place finish in his division. Jim Plasencia competed in Division 12 and finished with a score of 243, which resulted in a 2nd Place finish in his division.
