A loss is never the way a team wants to end their season, but that’s what happened for the Bucyrus girls basketball team.
The Lady Redmen lost to Riverdale 65-50 in sectional tournament play at Lexington High School on Saturday.
Riverdale had the lead the entire game, but the final score does not reflect on how close the game actually was.
“If we would have handled the ball a little better with their (Riverdale) press and if some calls would have gone a different way the outcome may have been different,” Bucyrus head coach Bethany Guinther said.
Riverdale never had a double digit lead until the fourth quarter. At the end of the first quarter the score was 20-13 and at halftime Bucyrus was able to shave off a point to be within six of Riverdale at 32-26. At the end of the third quarter Riverdale stretched the lead by a few more points 47-38, but Bucyrus was always within striking distance.
The Bucyrus bench was a huge help in not letting Riverdale pull away when Bucyrus got into foul trouble.
“The girls have been pushing and working hard with being able to play with key players being on the bench and they wanted to advance for the seniors… they wanted this game real bad,” Guinther said.
Unfortunately for the Bucyrus seniors they will not advance as the final buzzer sounded with Riverdale winning the game.
With the season over for the Lady Redmen, the team will look to make some changes next season.
“We have no seniors next year and it will be a rebuilding year,” Guinther said. “We will be stronger in the guard position with the experience we had in getting some varsity time; we will just have to work on getting a post inside.”
Bucyrus’ leading scorer was Gabby Seibert with 16 points followed by Kelci Simms with 15 points.
