The Galion boys and girls swimming teams defeated Mansfield Senior in a dual meet on Monday.

The school won 14 first-place finishes and 12 second- and six third-place finishes for a combined 108 points between the girls and boys, while its opponent finished with 57 points.

“I’m surprised we did as well after Saturday’s meet,” said Galion head swimming coach Ted Temple.

The Tigers defeated the Tygers 65-22. Placing first were Eli Skaggs (200-yard IM, 100 freestyle), Clay Karnes (500 free), and Sam Rigdon (50 free, 100 breaststroke).

Galion boys won all three relays. Skaggs, Luke Eisnaugle, Karnes and Rigdon took first in the 200 medley (1:55.61). Landon Rose, West Rose, Rigdon and Skaggs notched the top spot in the 200 free (1:41.53), while Rose, Eisnaugle, Lucas Conner and Clay Karnes take first in the 400 free.

The Lady Tigers won 43-35. Grabbing first-place were Allison DeNero (200 IM, 100 fly), Bri Wallis (50 free) and Sari Conner (100 free).

The girls won two relays. Wallis, Conner, DeNero and Elsie Barnhart won the 200 medley (2:10.77), while Barnhart, Megan Kostelnik, Sarah Garverick and Alexis Link won the 400 free in 5:36.06.

Temple said the team will need to improve on its sprint work.

“We’ll be ready for sectionals,” he said.

Galion will be back in action at a tri-meet hosted by Bucyrus on Wednesday.

45th Annual Delaware Invitational

The Galion boy’s and girl’s swimming team placed 5th and 8th overall, respectively, out of 12 schools at the 45th Annual Delaware Invitational on Saturday.

The Tiger were led by Eli Skaggs, the only double winner for the men in the meet. Skaggs won the 50 free and 100 butterfly.

Allison DeNero and Bri Wallis paced the Lady Tigers with 13th place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

“The Tiger men’s team looked very strong with a fifth place finish in this competitive meet,” Temple said. “We had some great swims and most of the younger swimmers had a great day with personal best times in their events.”
