Northmor and Galion to host big wrestling events in October

Young wrestlers in Crawford, Morrow and surrounding counties will have the chance to gain some valuable experience and engage in competition with two local events scheduled in October.

Local wrestling enthusiast and father, Dan Reyes of Galion, has been involved in bringing wrestling camps and clinics to the local area over the past few years and is once again helping to organize the two events this month. The Northmor Fall Wrestling Camp is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 and the Galion Fall Kickoff Open tournament will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Galion High School.

“We’ve tried to bring in some big names in wrestling to attract kids to the camps,” Reyes said. “It’s about the kids. I just want the kids around here to have the chance to experience a high level of wrestling and see if they enjoy it, and maybe want to continue in it.”

Both of Reyes’ sons, Austin and Aydan, wrestle and are also involved in other sports, which is the main reason why he is committed to building up the local wrestling community.

“I believe in any sports that in order to have and keep a good program in sports you have to build the foundation through the youth,” he said. “The youth is always the future.”

Several top coaches and wrestlers have conducted camps or taught at camps held in Galion over the past two years. In 2013, Erik Burnett, head coach and owner of Burnett Wrestling Club and head coach of Elyria High School, brought his camp to Galion.

In 2014, Ohio State wrestlers Logan Stieber and Reece Humphrey taught at camps in Galion. Stieber is a four-time NCAA champion and Humphrey is a three-time U.S. Open champion and three-time world team member.

Also in 2014, Colin Palmer, a four-time OHSAA champion from Lakewood St. Edward, taught at the Galion camp. He is the owner and head coach at CP Wrestling in Columbus.

Champs at camp

Champions will be in the house for the 2015 Northmor Fall Wrestling Camp, presented by Reyes, Scott Carr and Premier Technique Wrestling.

Tom Ryan, head coach of the 2015 NCAA champion Ohio State wrestling squad, and Nathan Tomasello, who captured the NCAA title at 125 pounds for the Buckeyes, will be the guest clinicians at this year’s camp.

Entering his ninth season as head coach at Ohio State, Ryan has led the Buckeyes program to unprecedented success. His record at OSU is 113-42, including a 47-26 Big Ten mark. Ryan’s 2015 Buckeyes captured the program’s first Big Ten title in 64 years. The NCAA wrestling championship was the first in school history. In the wake of Ohio State’s historic 2015 title run, Ryan was voted Big Ten, National Wrestling Coaches Association and InterMat coach of the year.

Tomasello, a red-shirt sophomore this season at Ohio State, finished his freshman campaign with a record of 33-4. He also won the Big Ten title at 125. His record against Big Ten competition during the regular season was 8-1.

Tomasello is a native of Parma, Ohio, and a graduate of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, where he was a four-time Ohio High School Athletic Association state wrestling champion. He lost only five matches during his high school career. He is majoring in Pre-Sports Industry.

The camp will be held Saturday, Oct. 24 at the old Northmor High School gymnasium. Instruction will be provided from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fee is $45 per camp participant. Checks should be made payable to Northmor Wrestling.

Each wrestler will be responsible for providing their own lunch. The camp is open to all ages. Campers are asked to arrive 15-20 minutes early to register.

OH-WAY tourney back in Galion

Reyes said Galion High School will be the site of the second annual Galion Fall Kickoff Open, sponsored by Galion Wrestling and the Ohio Wrestling Association for Youth (OH-WAY). The tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25.

“We didn’t have too bad of a turnout for the first year,” Reyes said. “I think we had about 150 kids.”

Competitors will be grouped according to age in seven divisions, ranging from age 5 to 19. No high school graduates are allowed in the tournament. The tournament is open to both male and female wrestlers. The entry fee is $20. The fee includes a free OH-WAY membership for 2015-16 for Ohio residents.

Weigh-in will be conducted on Oct. 24 from 7-8 p.m. and on Oct. 25 from 8-10 a.m. Wrestling begins at 11 a.m. on Oct. 25.

Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for kids age 6 and older. Kids age 5 and under will be admitted free of charge.
