York slips by Kenyon in defensive struggle

Two high-powered offenses met their match Sunday as the York College Spartans played host to the Kenyon College Ladies. The teams came into the contest averaging four or more goals per game, however, only one goal was scored Sunday as the host Spartans edged the Ladies, 1-0.

It was a heart-breaking defeat for the Ladies and their defense, which yielded the goal in the last minute of the game. Just before the clock reached double-digits, York’s Sydney LaMash rolled a pass across the top of the circle. Ali Posey then took a swipe at the ball and directed it into the Kenyon cage. It was the seventh goal of the season for Posey, who scored a dozen goals in 20 games last season.

The pace of the game was back-and-forth, with both teams constructing significant offensive spurts. The Kenyon pressure came to a boil just before the half. Over the course of the final nine minutes of the half, the Ladies earned five penalty corners and unleashed six shots at the Spartans’ cage. Four of those shots were saved by York goalkeeper Eve Hauptle and the other two were stopped at the goal line by defender Jennifer Morrissette.

The teams traded runs in the early part of the second half, but York (2-1) commanded the end of the game, cranking out six shots in the final 15 minutes.

Kenyon (2-1) had one final attempt at tying the game up, but a shot off a corner from Maddie Breschi was turned aside once again by Hauptle, who finished with eight saves.

At the other end of the turf, Kenyon sophomore keeper Sarah Speroff made seven saves to keep the Ladies in the thick of things.

Overall, shots were even at 12 apiece and Kenyon held a slight 11-7 edge in penalty corners.

The Ladies now head home and look forward to their home opener against The College of Wooster on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
