Ohio Northern University needed just one goal to knock off the Kenyon College Ladies Tuesday night in a non-conference women’s soccer match at Kerscher Stadium. It was the season opener for both teams.

The lone goal of the match came in the 52nd minute as Rachel Weigman found the back of the net as she carried a loose ball into the box and fired home.

Both teams had opportunities in the first half to break the scoreless tie. Weigman got the initial look just one minute in but her attempt was saved by Ladies keeper Alissa Poolpol.

Kenyon followed in the 18th minute as sophomore Virginia Fergusson fired but nothing came about as ONU’s Emily Brodict denied the shot.

After the first 45 minutes, Ohio Northern held a slight 8-5 advantage in shots.

The second half got underway but within a minute of action, the lights decided to turn off at Kerscher Stadium and resulted in a 25-minute delay.

Play resumed after the electrical issue and Weigman put the Polar Bears up for good with her goal.

After the goal, the Ladies found just one more shot-attempt on goal in the 66th minute from freshman Maia Emden. Brodict recorded four saves in the shutout.

ONU held a 15-7 advantage in shots over Kenyon and a 6-1 lead in corners.

Poolpol notched five saves in the tough loss while Emma Klug and Emden each tallied two shots.

Next up for Kenyon is a home date against Hanover College Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
