Cross country: Eagles, Knights take team titles at Early Bird meet

Colonel Crawford laid claim to the boys’ team championship and Northmor hoisted the girls’ team trophy at the Colonel Crawford Early Bird Invitational cross country meet held Saturday at CCHS.

The Eagles placed four runners among the top 10 and finished with 37 points in the boys’ meet. Carey came in second with 83 points and Northmor was third with 119 points. Cardington-Lincoln placed fourth with 121 points.

In the girls’ race, four Lady Knights finished in the top 10 to pace Northmor to the championship. The Lady Knights scored 34 points. Carey was also the runner-up in the girls’ competition with 94 points. Bucyrus placed third with 99 points and Colonel Crawford finished fourth with 117 points.

Jacob Long of Cardington-Lincoln won the boys’ individual championship. He posted a time of 15 minutes, 48.1 seconds on the 5-kilometer course.

Chad Johnson of CCHS was 10 seconds behind Long, finishing second with a time of 15:58.28. Teammate Brad Bauer turned in a time of 16:33.28 to claim third place. Nick Studer of CCHS came in fifth with a time of 16:49.67 and Brandon Long rounded out the quartet of Eagles in the top 10 by taking the 10th spot with a time of 17:12.27. Wade Hopkins was the fifth fastest runner for Colonel Crawford. He came in 17th place with a time of 17:32.4.

The rest of the top 10 featured Brendan Oswalt of Western Reserve in fourth place (16:45.44), Carson Pirnstill from Bucyrus in sixth position (17:00.93), Gavin Shindeldecker of Lucas in seventh place (17:01.32), Northmor’s A.J. Cook in eighth position (17:09.04) and Trevor Cook from Carey in the ninth spot (17:09.96).

Following are the rest of Northmor’s top five runners: Spencer Adams (15th, 17:29.43), James Walker (22nd, 17:56.43), Alec Moore (37th, 19:20.49) and Colin Berg (39th, 19:21.32).

Following are the other top five placers for Cardington-Lincoln: Josh Queener (18th, 17:41.09), Mike Queener (21st, 17:53.42), Derek Goodman (25th, 18:14.51) and Spencer Benson (67th, 20:35).

Carey runners finished 1-2 in the girls’ race followed by Northmor athletes in third, fourth and fifth place. Destiny DeFeo and Keely Wentz of Carey crossed the finish line within 13 seconds of each other. DeFeo took home top honors with a time of 19:45.9. Wentz turned in a time of 19:58.12.

Isabelle Ditullio was Northmor’s top placer, finishing third in 20:14.56. Kristen Duryea was right on her teammate’s heels in fourth place, posting a time of 20:18.38. Samantha Peters claimed fifth place with a time of 20:41.44. Rounding out the Lady Knights’ top five were Reanne McDonald and Brooke Bennett. McDonald placed 11th with a time of 21:48.81 and Bennett came in 13th with a time of 22:06.88.

Abby Johnson from Lucas placed sixth with a time of 20:45.08. Shaylee Campbell of Bucyrus came in seventh place, posting a time of 21:15.5. Upper Sandusky’s Madelyn Shasteen placed eighth with a time of 21:34.56. McKinley Shawver of Western Reserve finished ninth with a time of 21:39.46.

Anna Reffey was Colonel Crawford’s top placer, finishing 10th with a time of 21:45.66. The rest of the Eagles’ top five runners were Emily Kemper (12th, 21:55.45), Courtney Britt (32nd, 23:37.65), Haley Laughbaum (36th, 23:43.99), Bailey Niedermier (40th, 23:54.42) and Taylor Price (49th, 24:31.3).
