George Cooper Jr., a former member of the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons, is taking advantage of the National Football League Players Association’s (NFLPA) 10th annual Coaching Internship and will bring a wealth of knowledge to campus to assist the Kenyon College Lords coaching staff throughout the 2015 football season.

The NFLPA program allows transitioning and former National Football League (NFL) players to gain coaching experience at the collegiate level. Since 2006, more than 40 institutions have employed more than 60 coaching interns, many of whom continued their coaching careers at all levels. Currently, alumni of the program serve as position coaches for NFL clubs and coordinators and position coaches at Division-I and Division-II universities. There are 17 transitioning players in the program this season.

“We are thrilled to have coach Cooper on board this season,” Kenyon head coach Chris Monfiletto said. “Our players will have a great opportunity to learn from someone with experience at the highest level of professional football. We are also very lucky to have him as a member of our community.”

Prior to his NFL career, Cooper was a two-year starting tight end at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He gained additional experience as a player/coach for the Graz Giants in the Austrian Football League. While with the Giants, Cooper was also tasked with coaching the offensive and defensive lines for the league’s youth team.

Aside from playing and working on the gridiron, Cooper, who now resides in Westerville, Ohio, has experience as the co-founder and trainer for NotCrossFit, a fitness business focused on productive exercise. He previously worked as an assistant training director for Urban Active in Dublin, Ohio, where he performed fitness consultations and assessments.

Cooper and the Lords begin their first practice of the season today with an eye toward the season-opening game on September 5 at Sewanee: The University of the South.
