Copperheads shut down Graders, 11-3

ATHENS, Ohio — Southern Ohio scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to an 11-3 victory over Galion in Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League play on Sunday at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens.

The Graders (0-4) took the lead in the top of the first inning, scoring twice, but the Copperheads responded with the big home half of the inning. Southern Ohio tacked on three more runs in the third frame and added a solo run in the fourth to extend their lead to 9-2.

Galion pulled back one run in the sixth, but the Copperheads matched that with a single run in the bottom of the inning to run their lead to 10-3. Southern Ohio added its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kevin Shrock went 2-for-3 and scored a run for Galion. Alexander Malinsky and Mark Delas each had a hit and scored a run.

Mark Walton recorded a RBI on his lone hit. Austin Adams, Colton Carney and Jake Krupar each had a hit.

Brody Basilone took the loss for the Graders. He gave up five runs on five hits in two innings of work.

The Copperheads (2-0), 4-2 winners over the Graders on Saturday evening in Galion, pounded out 15 hits in their home opener on Sunday. Galion finished with eight hits.

Ted Williams went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for Southern Ohio. Jason Suchanek was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Tony Giannini finished 2-for-4 and scored four times for the Copperheads.

Trent Astle earned the win for Southern Ohio. He gave up two runs on six hits in five innings. Astle recorded eight strikeouts.

Galion returns home on Tuesday to face the Cincinnati Steam. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. at James D. Heddleson Field at Heise Park.

Cincinnati (2-0) handed the Hamilton Joes a pair of losses last week, winning 13-3 on Thursday and 5-4 on Friday.
