Northmor boys in first after Day 1 at league meet

MOUNT GILEAD — The Northmor Golden Knights track team made the short bus trip to Mount Gilead High School on Tuesday, May 9 for the first day of the two-day Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference track and field championships.

Through the field events and one relad, the Northmor boys squad is in first place with 55 points.

Two event champions have emerged so far for the Knights. Demetrius “Meechie” Johnson dominated the long jump, winning the event with a bound of 23 feet, 3 inches, while Nick Kearns finished eighth (17 feet, 9.5 inches). Teammate Tony Martinez took the crown in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet for the win while fellow Northmor teammate Aaron Berg snagged third place at 10 feet.

In the high jump for Northmor, the duo of James Walker and Kolton Smith finished in second and third place, respectively. Walker finished with a cleared height of 6 feet and Smith at 5-10. Walker was the second leg of the boys 4×800-meter relay team that finished in second place with a time of 8:32.45. AJ White, Alec Moore and Mostyn Evans were the other three members of that runner-up team.

Ethan Chapman earned fourth place in the discus (119 feet, 8.5 inches) and Nathan Price finished eighth in the shot put (39 feet and one-quarter inch).

Qualifying for the finals in sprint events on Thursday for Northmor’s boys team are: 110-meter hurdles, Smith and Anthony Petulla; 100-meter dash, Johnson; 400-meter dash, Johnson and Calvin Komer; 300-meter hurdles, Walker and Smith; 2oo-meter dash, Johnson.

On the girls side, the Lady Knights are currently sitting in fourth place with 29 points and have earned one event championship.

Hope Miracle won the pole vault for Northmor with a cleared height of 9 feet, 5.25 inches. Miracle also earned sixth place points in the high jump, clearing 4-6.

The 4×8 relay team of Julianna Ditullio, Rachel Morrison, Samantha Peters and Maddie Jordan finished fourth with a time of 10:32.55. Ditullio also finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14’2”. Selena Cortez finished fifth in the shot put for the Knights with a heave of 28’9.5”.

Qualifiers for the Lady Golden Knights for Thursday’s finals are: 100-meter hurdles, Cortez; 1oo-meter dash, Brooke Bennett; 400-meter dash, Bennett; 300-meter hurdles, Peters and Ditullio; 200-meter dash, Bennett and Bailey Wiseman.
