Lucas’ ground game dominant as Cubs down Northmor 37-12

GALION — After a scoreless first quarter, Lucas outscored Northmor 31-12 in the second and third periods en route to a 37-12 victory Friday in a non-conference game.

It wasn’t until 5:26 to go in the second quarter that someone scored, Lucas’ Austin Holbrook on a 2-yard run. The Cubs tacked on a 2-point conversion. Four minutes later, Lucas’ Jeb Grover scored on a 1-yard fun, followed by another two-point conversion.

But with 12 seconds to go in the first half, Jordan Wiseman hit Conan Becker for a 21-yard scoring pass, cutting the Cubs lead to 16-6 at the intermission.

Lucas upped the lead to 24-7 when Holbrook scored again and added another two-point conversion. Holbrook’s third TD was a 9-yard run with 16 seconds to go in the third quarter and and this time, the point-after kick gave the Cubs a 31-7 advantage.

Northmor’s finally got on the board again when Becker returned the ensuing kicking 87 yards for his second TD of the game.

Lucas’ made the final score 37-12 when Grover hit paydirt from 7 yards out with a little over six minutes to go in the game.

The Cubs racked up 491 yards of offense, none via the pass. Holbrook had 277 yards rushing and Grover 120.

Northmor finished with 156 yards rushing, 78 on the ground. The Knights also turned the ball over three times, two fumbles and an interception. Wiseman was 10 of 16 passing for 137 yards. Becker had three catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Lucas had the ball for more than 35 minutes in the game thanks to its ball control offense and had 29 first downs vs. 8 for Northmor. The Knights had the ball on offense for just over 12 minutes.
