GOP hasn’t done enough to fight abortion

This week marks the 43rd anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, a landmark Supreme Cout decision which legalized abortion through the U.S.

Republicans have made fighting abortion a calling card in elections and in fund-raising through the last 43 years.

GOP Presidents have been elected who have opposed abortion.

I remember Election Night in 2000 when George W. Bush was elected President and Republicans gained majorities in Senate as well as the House of Representatives at the same time the Supreme Court.

A co-worker I worked with at the time was upset, thinking that meant that a lot of changes were set, including reversing Roe vs. Wade.

Fifteen years later, nothing has happened.

In the past several months, several viral videos have emerged which cite bad practices by Planned Parenthood. Republicans have jumped on this, but nothing has happened.

This morning, I received a press release with comments from area Republican Congressman Jim Jordan which reads:

“Today Americans again remember the tragic Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade that has resulted in the deaths of over 58 million unborn babies in the last 43 years. Once again, thousands of Americans are marching through the streets of Washington, D.C. to protest that decision.

“I firmly believe that our nation is on the path to restoring a culture of life in America once again. At the beginning of this year, Congress sent a bill to President Obama’s desk that would stop federal funding for America’s leading abortion provider, Planned Parenthood. President Obama vetoed this legislation, but he can’t veto the will of the people forever.

“In the Declaration of Independence, the Founders listed the right to life among our unalienable God-given rights. The thousands of Millennials marching today show vividly that this generation understands the value of life and is committed to defending the unborn. I’m proud to represent their voices in Congress, along with the voices of our most vulnerable – the unborn.”

For those who oppose abortion, Jordan’s thoughts are nice, but it’s frustrating to see that 43 years after Roe v. Wade, all we have is words.
