COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five-time state baseball tournament umpire Dan McGinnis is the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s new Director of Officiating Development for baseball, OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg has announced. McGinnis takes over for the retired Kyle McNeely, who held the post since 2009.

A native of Columbus, McGinnis was named Ohio’s 2013 Baseball Official of the Year. He is a past president of the Central Ohio Baseball Umpires Association and now serves on the Board of Directors of UMPS CARE Charities, a non-profit organization established by Major League Baseball umpires (www.umpscare.com).

Under Rugg’s leadership, McGinnis joins 11 other individuals who serve as the OHSAA Director of Officiating Development in their respective sport. The Directors serve as instructors, state rules interpreters, official’s observers, liaisons with local officials associations and consultants to the OHSAA. “The OHSAA baseball community is very fortunate to have Dan McGinnis as their Director of Officiating Development,” Rugg said. “Dan brings a wealth of experience to the position and has great credibility among umpires in this state and nationally.”

McGinnis has been a licensed OHSAA baseball umpire for 16 years and has conducted the state umpire mechanics clinic since 2011. He has been an adult education instructor since 2005.

“Ohio has some of the finest high school baseball umpires around,” McGinnis said. “Our state tournament is second to none and we need to make sure that we are providing these student-athletes with the best qualified officials. Clinic participation, observations and continuing education need to be part of the process in determining their selection.”

McGinnis recently retired after 35 years in the pharmaceuticals industry, including the last 27 years as a national account manager. He is a 1978 graduate of Western Michigan University. Dan and his wife, Deb, have two sons who played collegiate baseball and are now baseball umpires.
