The Crawford Park District hosted a salamander hunt at Heckert Nature Preserve on April 5. Kids and their parents waded into a vernal pool inside the park looking for salamanders, frogs and anything else that crawled. They found a total of six salamanders (three small-mouths and three mutts) and one dead salamander. There were also several frog species and a few crayfish in the afternoon’s catch. Rob Denton, a researcher from Ohio State University, will use the salamanders as part of his study on the migration habits of salamanders in Crawford County. The animals will be released after genetic data is collected. (Inquirer photos/Matt Echelberry)
