Packed house for Kiwanis Chili Day

Galion Kiwanis Club’s annual Chili Day was held at Wendy’s on Feb. 11. From 4:30 - 7:30 that evening, patrons piled into the restaurant for all-you-can-eat chili and a choice of side. The lobby was so full that at one point the restaurant temporarily ran out of baked potatoes to serve.

Event Chairman Lonnie Eagle started Chili Day in 1996. As he handed out tickets to patrons walking through the door that night, he explained this is about the 15th year for tradition (it has not happened every year). Since its inception, Chili Day has always been held at Wendy’s, which Eagle said has been a great arrangement for both the club and the restaurant. Store owner Dan Beach is also a Kiwanis member. First Federal Bank paid for the advertising and ticket costs this year.

Money raised from ticket sales and donations goes to scholarships for Galion High School seniors. Each year Kiwanis gives out two $2,000 awards. Originally, Eagle said the club gave out three $500 scholarships, and for a couple of years the money was instead donated to sports teams for uniforms.

Over the course of three hours, Wendy’s went through an estimated 20-25 gallons of Chili!
