Have you been thinking about keeping honey bees but aren’t sure where to begin? The Knox County Beekeepers Association (KCBA) is hosting two classes in beekeeping. The Beginners Beekeeping Class will be February 8, 2014, covering all basic information needed to start on your way to becoming a beekeeper. Topics include what kind of bees are best suited to our area; where to get bees, what equipment is needed – and how to use it. Most importantly discussions will be held on how to keep bees healthy and how to deal with pest problems.

A second class is scheduled for existing beekeepers who want to learn more about bees. This Advanced Beekeeping Class scheduled for March 8, 2013. This class will cover queen rearing, swarm catching, pollen collection and more. Beginners are welcomed to the advanced class and will gain useful information.

All the basic information needed to become a beekeeper will be covered. The sessions will be taught by beekeeping members of Knox County Beekeepers Association with over 100 years of combined experience. “We can’t teach everything there is to know about beekeeping in one or two days, but it will be enough to get anyone interested in beekeeping started”, says Richard Shoots KCBA President, “There is a lot to know, and even as experienced beekeepers we continue to learn something new all the time”.

Both classes will be held at the Knox County Extension Office, 160 Columbus Road, Mt. Vernon, OH 43050. Seats are limited so pre-registration is required. Each class is $40.00 per person or $70 per couple. Current members of KCBA receive a $10 discount. Lunch is provided and a beginners book and information binders are included.
