It was Opening Day for the Northmor varsity baseball squad on Monday, and the Golden Knights claimed a 5-3 non-conference win over the visiting Mansfield Christian Flames.
Zach Carroll was as dominant as a pitcher can be for the winners, holding the visitors hitless and striking out 12 of the batters he faced to go with 3 walks in 4 innings as the starter. The dozen whiffs accounted for every out the Black-and-Gold registered when he was on the mound.
Jeff Beck worked one-third of a frame and was tagged for the 3 runs. He struck out 1 and walked 1. James Donner finished up, going a solid 2 2/3 innings yielding 2 hits and whiffing 5.
Jeff Vulgamore and Devin Lindsay threw for the Flames, combing for 6 hits allowed, 3 punchouts via strikes and 5 free passes. Vulgamore was the pitcher of record as the starter.
Offensively for Northmor, Donner swatted a double and a single. Carroll, Daniel Donner, Gunnar Lilly and Zach Neuman notched a base rap apiece.
Chris Vealey and Jeff Vulgamore garnered a one-bagger each for Mansfield Christian.
“Carroll gave us a great start and Donner was able to finish strong on the3 mound for us,” long-time Northmor head coach Buck Workman stated. “The pitching seemed to be way ahead of the hitters so far. Not a lot of hard hit balls tonight. I was happy that we only struck out three times though. We just need to square up on some balls.”
