College football: 4 Buckeyes suspended for Va Tech game

The Ohio State University athletic department confirmed today that four Buckeyes football players will miss the 2015 season opener after being suspended.

All-American defensive end Joey Bosa, hybrid backs Jalin Marshall and Dontre Wilson, and wide receiver Corey Smith were each suspended for one game due to undisclosed violations of OSU athletic department policy.

The opening game of the 2015 season is scheduled for prime time on Monday, Sept. 7 against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Hokies upset the Buckeyes 35-21 in the second game of the 2014 season at Ohio Stadium.

Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer addressed the suspensions during comments he made at the Big Ten football media day in Chicago.

“Our athletics department has policies,” Meyer said. “I am fully supportive of it. We are playing an extremely talented team. You push forward. There’s no perfect team or program. We had the highest graduation rate in the history of OSU football. Our guys are locked in.”

Meyer also told reporters at the Big Ten media day that he does not have a dim view of the players who were suspended.

“It’s a college mistake, whether it’s social or academic, whatever it is, it’s not a character indictment,” Meyer said.

Following the game at Virginia Tech, Ohio State returns home to play the rest of its non-conference schedule for 2015. The Buckeyes will play host to Hawaii on Sept. 12, Northern Illinois on Sept. 19, and Western Michigan on Sept. 26.

Ohio State opens Big Ten play on Oct. 3 at Indiana.
