MANSFIELD — The season ended in a way that many games did for the Lady Tigers as they were blasted 54-35 by Shelby in sectional tournament play Tuesday night here in the Pete Henry Gymnasium.

“That game we just played against Shelby was a replica of the season,” a disappointed first-year Galion head coach Bryce Lehman stated. “When things don’t go our way, we hang our heads! We challenged the girls, in the practices leading up to this game, to pick up the pace and intensity. Shelby did nothing different tonight from when we played them two weeks ago (also a loss). They simply out-hustled us all night. They got almost every offensive rebound ad their end of the floor. They got every loose ball. They simply wanted it more than us. It appeared that there were some girls who just did not come to play. That is sad!”

The Lady Whippets held Galion (4-19) to single digits scoring in each of the first three quarters. The winners had leads of 16-7, 28-13 and 37-22 at the end of those frames, respectively. They also took the final stanza, 17-13.

Grace Brown, Raven Crawford and Taylor Valentine scored 8 points apiece for the Lady Orange-and-Blue. Sydney Dameron had 5 points, go go along with 2 apiece from Robin Barnes, Jaime Ehrman and Kayla LaForest.

The locals were a poor 15-for-44 on two-point shots (34%), 0-for-8 on threes and attempted just 8 free throws, making 5 (63%). They grabbed 32 rebounds (Crawford had 8), and turned the ball over 24 times. Crawford chipped in with 3 steals. Valentine and Ramonda Dorsey handed out 3 assists each.

The Lady Whippets’ trio of Taylor Fulton, Kenna Goth and Gabby Stephens combined for 39 points. Fulton led the charge with a game-high 16 tallies. Goth netted a dozen, and Stephens, 11.

“Coming on tonight, I had a good feeling about competing against Shelby,” noted Lehman. “They had two seniors (one starter) that were out with injuries which I thought could help us. Instead, we allow the replacement to score 12 points. We need to change the attitude of girls basketball in this community. We need girls in the gym giving equal time to basketball along with their other sports, but that has yet to happen. Until things change, we will continue to struggle. We challenged the underclassmen, last night after the game, to be the group who turns things around and take improving in their skills a priority. I hope the next couple of years shows improvement because we have a lot of talent returning.”
