LIMA — It’s been 50 years since Ford Motor Company debuted their pony car, the Ford Mustang on April 17, 1964. On the night of April 16, 1964, Ford blitzed the airwaves by buying the 9:30 to 10 p.m. slot (Eastern time) on all three American television networks to talk about the Mustang. The company also bought ads in 2,600 newspapers. The official introduction came the next day, April 17, at the New York World’s Fair. What most surprised Ford executives was the Mustang’s appeal across generations. The median age of Mustang buyers was thirty-one. But one buyer in six was between forty-five and fifty-four. Ford’s new 2015 Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition may not be listed as a 2014.5 model, but it comes exactly 50 years after the original was debuted at New York World’s Fair back in 1964. Only 1,964 examples of the 2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition will be built. The 2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition will go on sale this fall, but it might be difficult to get one with only 1,964 made. You might want to inquire about it with your local Ford dealer, as these limited editions are not expected to last.

Robert Tomlinson, of Lima, owned the Avis Agency and parking garage on East Market Street in the 1970’s. A gentleman brought this 1964 1/2 Mustang, which was in pieces, for storage. After three years of trying to locate the owner, Mr. Tomlinson applied to the state of Ohio for a title. He then repaired the Mustang to drivable condition, and gave the Mustang to his daughter Jill (Tomlinson) Gruber. She drove the car through high school at Bath and college at Bowling Green State University. After graduation, she bought a new car. Her father was going to restore the Mustang for her, but passed away before it was finished. Her brother, Greg Tomlinson, completed the restoration. This 1964 1/2 Mustang was the 21st Mustang built on the first day of production.
