On Aug. 19, the ribbon was cut to officially open Hesby Drive.
While construction is ongoing, a ceremony was held this week celebrating the new Hesby Drive, a road leading into the Galion City Schools’ campus.
Roy Benson, trustee of the Phillip Hesby Estate, pointed out that Hesby had also previously donated 28 acres of land a number of years ago when the Galion City School campus was first proposed.
“I think this a fairly large step in the right direction for the city,” observed Mayor Tom O’Leary. The drive creates another entrance and exit for the school, but it is hoped that it will alleviate traffic on St. Rt. 598 along Portland Way.
“Hopefully it’ll cut down a lot of congestion,” remarked President of the Galion City School Board, Dennis Long
The road is also very convenient to those who are affected by the Portland Way North bridge being closed, as the public is allowed to access all of Hesby Drive until the construction is complete. After that, the part of the road that connects to the school will be gated off, allowing entrance only for school purposes. There are plans to possibly put businesses, such as fast food restaurants, on the surrounding land.
