Members of the Galion-Crestline Area Chamber of Commerce presented a $2,000 check yesterday to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The money was raised at the 12th annual Chamber-McDonald’s Golf Outing on June 19. The 108 golfers who played donated money throughout the afternoon to participate in various contests.

Scott Nickell, owner of both the Galion and Bucyrus McDonald’s restaurants, accepted the donation on behalf of RMHC. “I can’t believe what a small community like this gives,” he commented.

Nickell explained the money will benefit the going to have the Columbus Ronald McDonald House, which is currently undergoing an expansion to add more guest rooms. When finished, he said it will be the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world.

Families who have a seriously ill child in the hospital can stay in the house for free, as a “home away from home.”

Chamber President/CEO Joe Kleinknecht reported that a total of $18,637 has been raised to date for Ronald McDonald House Charities through the golf outings. McDonald’s has been the Corporate Sponsor of this event since it began in 2003.

Despite some of the negative publicity the restaurant giant receives, Nickell emphasized the company gives back to the community in a number of ways. Last year, Galion Youth Baseball received a $20,000 grant from the McDonald’s Corporation for improvements to its field. Throughout each year, some restaurants do special promotions to raise money for various other charities, like the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
