A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday for Firelands Federal Credit Union. The company is building a new, 4,400-square-foot facility on State Route 598.
Firelands has been at its current location (419 Harding Way West) for the last 10-12 years. President/CEO Steve Wasserman explained it has outgrown the building and decided now was the time to relocate.
“Galion has been a great community for us. We’re really excited about the new location,” Wasserman commented. “It’s been a three year project and the Chamber and the city have been super to work with.”
The ceremony was held at the construction site of the new facility, which is immediately north of the Obstetrics and Gynecology office of Dr. Tyler Huggins. Firelands’ Board of Directors and several staff members were at the ceremony, joined by members of the Galion-Crestline Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Galion officials and the Crawford County Education and Economic Development Partnership.
Wooden stakes were plotted in the ground, showing the outline of the future building, driveway and parking lot. The landscaping and lighting design will be similar to that of Huggins’ office.
As far as when the project will be complete, Wasserman joked that he would like to be moved in by the end of June, but the realistic projection is the end of August or early September, depending on the weather.
The general contractor for the construction is Janotta & Hernor Inc. Heavy machinery has already been rolled out to the site.
