Galion has a colorful and lengthy past. The events noted in this column are taken from the Galion Inquirer archives from years past. The focus will be items of personal or community interest from 10, 25, 50 and 75 years ago.

The week of December 28, 2003

The Galion Tiger varsity boy’s basketball defeated Upper Sandusky 65-45, led by Darin Bright and Ricky Rinehart.

Galion schools were removed from the academic watch list. The school had the best report card scores in five years.

Stocks of local interest: ATT 19.78, CSX 35.66, Timken 19.63, Walmart 52.52

The weather forecast: high temperatures in the mid 30s, small chance of snow.

Courtney Hart was pictured taking a slide down the hill on her sled at Powers Reservoir.

The week of December 28, 1988

Freezing rain changed to snow … accumulating 4 inches on Dec 29. Pictured working in the snowstorm was Jack Smorick of Buchannon Sanitation Service on Summit Street.

Doug’s Toggery advertised their end of the year sale at 110 Harding Way Westmen’s clothing store.

Famous Galionite Ralph Mulberg had his picture taken wearing Tingley boots from Liberty Mill.

Tara Murphy was pictured playing in snow with her dog Brittany.

Mr. & Mrs. Robert Maley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Brent Ekin was pictured pitching hay to his cows on his Millsboro Road farm.

Karen Davis married James Bittner III.

The week of December 28, 1963

Tri City Drive In theatre featured a special showing for two days only- “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Sail a Crooked Ship”. In car heaters were available.

The Continental Motel Dining room at 920 Charles Street announced that they were opening on December 30. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were served.

New city officials sworn into office included John Wagner as city solicitor, seven council members and mayor Jay Nicholls.

The Clothes Horse advertised an after Christmas clearance sale that included a 20% discount on most items in the store.

Christmas lighting contest winners: Special Theme - W. J Kunkel residence at 100 Arlington Avenue, Overall Lighting - William Korner residence at 607 Portland Way South, Nativity Scene - Ferd Unkrich at 395 Evans Avenue, Elaborate display of scenes and lights - John Lehman at 110 Third Avenue.

The week of December 28, 1938

A cold snap brought ice and snow to Ohio. Unofficial Galion temperature readings were 4-6 degrees. A 30 mph wind blew through town.

Galion Orangemen Cagers annexed another victory but not much glory when they defeated the alumni in the annual holiday classic, 34-33.

State Theatre announced a special New Year’s Eve Midnite show starting at 12 o’clock. Joel McCrea and Andrea Leeds were starring in “Youth Takes a Fling”. All seats cost 40 cents.

Morris 5c to 10c Store on the Public Square advertised ladies flannelette night gowns 89 cents each and children’s warm knit sleeping garments with feet 50 cents each.
