With the weather warming up outside golfers have begun to venture out to their favorite golf courses once again. Golfing is sport that can be enjoyed by the young or old. It is a competitive sport that requires discipline and the ability to keep your cool when things go bad. You can go out alone or with others. You can compete in tournaments or leagues. The courses themselves provide challenging holes with magnificent scenery. Some choose to walk the course while others ride a cart. What you’re your preferences are when it comes to golfing our surrounding area provides plenty of courses that are aimed to please. The first of which is Valley View golf course which is located a few miles north of Galion on State Route 598. They are a family run course that has been a public course since it opened in 1963. It is an eighteen hole course that includes ponds and wooded areas.
Valley View is currently running a special on Monday and Wednesday mornings where it includes eighteen holes plus one half cart for $19. That runs from 8 a.m. till 1 p.m. on those days. The golf course also host several outings and leagues. Their popular couples scramble and pot luck will be held every other Sunday at 4:30 p.m. There are new leagues this year and are as follows. There will be a two-man scramble league with handicap which will play on Tuesday evenings. There will also be another two person scramble league which will be played on Friday mornings. There will also be a nine hole scramble that is open to all interested golfers and will be played on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. They also have a women’s league that plays Wednesday mornings and Thursday nights. Valley View also provides for golf outings. These outings include anything from class reunions, to business outings. Along with these golf outings a covered picnic area and catering area is also available.
Another golf course in the area is the Galion Country Club. The Galion Country club golf course is a private golf course that was established in 1926. It is an eighteen hole course that is located just south of town on State Route 309. The mission statement for the club is as follows “It is the Galion Country Club’s goal to provide its members and guests with quality club experience. In supporting this we are committed to providing excellent service in all areas of the club for the entire family. Providing a very high quality golf experience by maintain the best possible conditioned golf course in North Central Ohio. Providing a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for dining and entertaining”.
The course itself is built on 180 acres of rolling and flat terrain. It has twenty four acres of fairways, twenty five bunkers, five ponds, four acres of tees, and two and a half acres of greens. Along with the golf the country club also offers a heated pool and a tennis court. There are several tournaments going on at the club this summer. First is the Ed Koehl Jr. tournament on Saturday June 4 at 10 a.m. On Monday June 13 the junior golf, swim and tennis camp will start and run through Friday the 17. It will begin at 9 a.m. and run through 12 on those days. There will also be a golf tournament on father’s day weekend June 25-26. The Ol’ Buddy Tournament will be taking place those days starting at 10 a.m. For those wanting to become a member one can fill out a prospective membership request on the clubs website at www.galioncc.com/membershipinfo.
For those who are looking for a nine hole course New Winchester golf course outside of Bucyrus located at 765 Poe Road is the place to go. This public course also includes a driving range across the street. The course itself has nine hole course that can be played through twice for eighteen holes. That course goes across several streams and ponds. One can either walk the course or rent a cart. Rates are as low as $7.50 on a weekday. They have a special on Mondays and Fridays from open till 3 p.m. which includes the full eighteen holes and a cart for $16 with the mention of seeing the special on the website at newwinchestergolfcourse.com.
New Winchester has several events coming up which include the seventh annual Father’s day tournament on June 14 at 9 a.m. New Winchester is currently taking preregistration for this event for members and non members of the course. When the tournament concludes there will be a pork chop dinner. Another tournament going on is the Fred Weiland Memorial tournament on June 28 at 9 a.m. This tournament is in honor of one of original founders of the course. The nine hole tournament concludes with a barbeque dinner. Also on July 5 they will be having the red, white, and blue tournament. This tournament is a handicap tee tournament where the golfers play from the tee of their handicap. For golfers with a 0-5 handicap play from blue tees, 6+ from white tees, and 10+ from the red tees. This event is $25 for members and $35 for non members. The course has single and family memberships available that goes through the 2014 season.
