The Crawford Park District will be hosting a “Year of the Salamander” kick-off event. The Year of the Salamander Kick-off will take place on Saturday, January 11 at 1PM. It will be held at the Lowe-Volk Park Nature Center.

Park Naturalist — and salamander enthusiast — Josh Dyer has planned fun, family-oriented activities for the event, including salamander-themed bingo, and of course, a chance to see a salamander up close. Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) has designated 2014 as the Year of the Salamander to energize salamander education, research, and conservation. This is a worldwide effort, leveraged through the actions of numerous partner organizations and individuals from all walks of life – public to professional, including your Crawford Park District.

There are over 600 species of salamanders in the world, with almost half of those being threatened with extinction. Through many human-induced threats, salamander populations are declining worldwide. They need our help! The Crawford Park District will be hosting many salamander related events throughout the coming year to raise awareness, appreciation, and conservation action for the salamanders of Crawford County and elsewhere.
