Former Vanguard Group official to speak at Ashland event

George “Gus” Sauter, former chief investment officer for The Vanguard Group, will speak at a luncheon event on “Investing in an Uncertain Economy,” on Friday, April 22, at 12:30 p.m. in the John C. Myers Convocation Center on the Ashland University campus.

The cost for the lecture and luncheon is $10 per person, which helps underwrite a portion of Ashland University’s expenses for this event. Sauter retired from his role as Vanguard’s first global chief investment officer at the end of 2012, after 25 years with the company.

As Vanguard’s CIO, he was a member of the CEO’s senior staff and he oversaw portfolio management of Vanguard’s $1.8 trillion of internally managed stock, bond and money market funds. Sauter also worked on industry issues with governmental entities, including the SEC and the Federal Reserve, and has testified at hearings of the House Financial Services Committee.

He served as a member of various industry committees, including the Securities Industry Association Trading Committee, the NYSE Institutional Advisors’ Trading Committee and the NASDAQ Quality of Markets.

Sauter currently is a member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investors Advisory Group and the University of Chicago Booth School Council. He also writes articles for The Wall Street Journal online edition.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1976 and his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1980.
