Two MCTC Buses carried 24 Morrow County and Marion County seniors to Crawford and Hardin Counties to enjoy a Monday afternoon getaway followed by an evening dinner and a concert.

Highlights of the trip included the Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works, the Grohe Murals and a concert at Ohio Northern University.

Tour guide, Judy Lust said manufacturing began at the Bucyrus Copper Works in 1874. It is the last of the old copper kettle shops in America that is still making its original apple butter kettles and making them mostly by hand.

Owner and Coppersmith Steve Schifer said that he has worked in the shop for 40 years. Coppersmith, Rex Bittner has been there 30 years.

The company ships copper tympani, kettles, utensils and decorative items all over the world. Schifer said they are presently working on a popcorn kettle to be shipped to Australia.

The group next visited the Eric Grohe mural, “Bucyrus, Ohio, Great American Crossroad” on the public square in Bucyrus. A tour guide explained the meaning behind the people in the mural as well as the history of the Trompe-l’oeil painting that was done in 1999. A visit to the St. Paul’s church mural “The Light” was the last stop in Bucyrus before they passed the mural “Liberty remembers” as they left town to journey to Ada.

After a dinner at the Ohio Northern University Inn, the group enjoyed a concert by the ONU Symphonic Band. The band presented “Soundtrack” featuring music from Star Wars, Titanic, Gone with the Wind, the Sound of Music and other famous movies.

Happy Wanderers Leader and organizer, Ruehrmund said she has been organizing trips for groups for 20 years. She began with her church group and has gradually extended the group to include people from all around Morrow and Marion Counties.

Retired teacher, Judy Graham, said that Ruehrmund takes care of every detail from getting tickets to ordering meals and transportation. Graham has been going on the trips for three years and said that each one is full of interesting stops as well as being great fun.
