As the number of people with a job declines, the unemployment rate for Crawford County was on the rise in January.

The non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the county was at 7.1 percent in January compared with 6.1 percent in January 2015, according to data released last week by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

But the number of unemployed remained the same at 1,400 in Crawford, while employment dropped to 17,600 in January from 18,300 in January 2016.

Ohio’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in January 2016, down from 5.1 percent in January 2015 but up from a revised 4.8 percent in December.

The number of unemployed has decreased by 12,000 in the past 12 months from 291,000.

The U.S. unemployment rate for January was 4.9 percent, down from 5.0 percent in December and down from 5.7 percent in January 2015.

From January 2015 to January 2016, nonagricultural wage and salary employment grew 80,800.

Other nearby counties saw stagnant or negative changes in unemployment.

In Richland County, the unemployment rate slightly declined to 6.8 percent in January compared with 6.9 percent in January 2015. Although unemployment in Richland declined from 3,800 workers to 3,600, employment also declined from 51,200 in January 2015 to 49,300 in January.

The unemployment rate in Morrow County remained the same in January compared with the same month in 2015 at 6.3 percent despite a drop of 100 workers in employment. The January unemployment rate was 6 percent for Knox County compared with 5.6 percent in January 2015.
