Galion Country Club to be auctioned

Galion’s 90-year-old private country club is up for sale.

The Galion Country Club, 4810 state Route 309, will be auctioned at noon on March 19. An open house will take place from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The club’s board of trustees announced on Facebook earlier this month that it entered into a contract with Craig A. Miley Realty and Auction to handle the proceedings.

“I think it’s an opportunity for a public golf course,” auctioneer Craig Miley said.

The club originally started in 1926 with 110 members who were mostly professional men and merchants from Galion. The golf course was also used by Galion High School’s boys and girls golf teams.

The 143-acre facility includes an 18-golf course, driving range, 25 acres of fairways, 25 bunkers, 2.5 acres of greens, full service restaurant and bar, a 2,600 square-feet dining and banquet area, pool house and tennis courts.

“It’s a great facility,” Miley said. “Everything is included.”

He added that there was an opportunity to expand the club house, which would better accommodate weddings and receptions.

The prospective buyer would be required to maintain the facility as a golf course for three years.

“We would still like to see it stay as a golf course,” said Miley, who has been a member of the club for several years. Though membership is more than 100, it has declined as industries vanished from the city, he said.

Other golf courses in Crawford County include Cranberry Hills, 5965 state Route 103, in New Washington; New Winchester Golf Course, 765 Poe Road, in Bucyrus; River Oaks Golf Course, 1330 E. Mansfield, in Bucyrus; and Valley View Golf Course, 2106 state Route 598, in Galion.

Ownership of the Galion Country Club was not available for comment.
