Sherrod Brown backs plan to close loopholes in Visa Waiver program

U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) Thursday announced his support for a plan to ensure ISIS terrorists are not able to slip into the United States through the Visa Waiver Program. The Visa Waiver Program allows business or leisure travelers from designated countries to visit the United States for up to 90 days without a visa. If an ISIS recruit attempts to travel to the U.S. on a fraudulent paper passport issued by a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program, that individual would avoid biometric screening and an in-person interview before departure, thanks to the expedited procedures of the program. Brown and his colleagues in the Senate Democratic Caucus will be introducing legislation to tighten loopholes in the current Visa Waiver Program, strengthening our national security while ensuring a robust tourism industry.

“A more secure Visa Waiver Program will ensure that ISIS terrorists are blocked from entering the country,” said Brown. “And we must put an end to the ability of individuals on the terrorist watch list to purchase deadly assault weapons. The U.S. must take immediate action to close loopholes that would allow ISIS terrorists to enter our country and access the means to attack innocent Americans.”

Brown is also joining Senate Democrats in urging Senate Republican leaders to immediately pass legislation that would close a loophole in existing law that allows individuals on the terror watch list to purchase deadly assault weapons.
