Rachel Redolf of Bucyrus, a sophomore majoring in English, is a member of Heidelberg University’s Symphonic Band during the 2015-16 academic year.

The 43-piece band, under the direction of Dr. John E. Owen, will give its fall concert on Saturday, Nov. 14.

During the week in which the nation celebrates Veterans Day, the 43-member band will kick off the concert with “Second Suite for Military Band in F major” by Gustav Holst, followed by Ronald LoPresti’s “Elegy for A Young American.” “Elegy,” composed in 1964, is dedicated to the memory of President John F. Kennedy and explores the various stages of grief the nation encountered upon Kennedy’s assassination.

Also on the program is an original composition by Owen, written in tribute to the late Elden Ehrman, long-time band director at Seneca East High School. Owen’s former student Dana Willman, current director of bands at Seneca East, requested the composition from her former professor. Owen recently reworked the piece, and the band’s performance of it marks the first of the newly edited version.

The band also will perform a John Philip Sousa march, “The Royal Welch Fusiliers March,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Four Dances from West Side Story,” and other pieces.
