Work starts this week on Portland Way South

Construction began Tuesday on the Portland Way South project, as the road next to the Mill Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Home was blocked off as crews worked on the storm sewer.

Officials said delays should be expected in the upcoming weeks.

“The main subcontractors will be Buckeye Excavating and Smith Concrete who will be doing the total reconstruction of the area just south of the hospital and south end of the city limits to the north of the train tracks,” Galion Mayor Tom O’Leary said.

“We are starting the storm sewer (Tuesday), we will be here for two days this week and then we will be back next week,” Buckeye Excavating Job Superintendent Jeff Nickoli said. “We will continue the storm sewer until it’s completed and then we will start on the road.”

O’Leary said the total reconstruction of that section of the state highway within the city limits is the city’s responsibility under the Ohio Revised Code, even though it’s a state route.
