Group helps support those in the military

Do you have a loved one in the military?

The Support Galion Troops are looking to send care packages every month for Galion residents who have family in the military.

“We want to help as many as we can,” group founder Gloria Smith said. “They can have any connection to Galion. As long as the individual lives here, we will help their loved one.”

She added that these packages mean a lot to the people who are serving the country as well as those who send the packages.

“What a difference it makes in their lives.” Smith said. “We get thank you notes from them about how much they appreciate the care packages.”

She said it makes it all worthwhile when they receive a thank you note.

“We’ve had requests where someone doesn’t get a care package.” Smith said. “(The people we help) call us and ask us if we can send them one and we do.”

During the Christmas holiday, the group sends out two packages in November for the Christmas Holiday.

“Our biggest pack out of the year is November,” Smith said. “We do a regular package and then a Christmas package.”

During the year the group takes only names of those who are deployed, but during the Christmas holiday they help military members stationed in the states as well.

The group sends out twelve packs a month to individuals who are deployed in the military.

“It costs about $50 per package and $15.90 to send it box out.” Smith said. “It’s (at least) $195 overall every month and it will be more at Christmas.”

The group is solely supported by donations.

The group is having a fund-raiser Nov. 1 at Payne’s Pizza, 120 Harding Way W. in Galion. A time is not yet available.

Drop off times for donations are 7 p.m. every fourth Monday in the banquet room at the VFW in Galion. Contact Gloria Smith at 419-468-4321 or mail donations to P.O. Box 334, Galion 44833.
