Death of Galion man ruled homicide, son in custody

On Oct.1, the Galion Police Department received information of concern regarding the death of Fredrick Saunders Sr., 68, of Galion. Mr. Saunders passed away at Galion Community Hospital on September 30, 2015.

The Galion Police Department, with the assistance of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office began investigating the circumstances of Mr. Saunders’s death. A search warrant was conducted at the family residence at 401 S. Union St., Galion, Ohio on Thursday evening. An autopsy of Mr. Saunders was conducted on Friday morning in conjunction with this investigation.

Preliminary results of the autopsy indicate that Mr. Saunders died as a result of strangulation and blunt force trauma to his head. Evidence obtained during the search warrant on Union St. substantiated that foul-play did occur inside the residence.

Investigators had taken into investigative custody Fredrick Saunders Jr., 36 years old, on Thursday afternoon. He is being held at the Crawford County Jail. The Crawford County Prosecutor’s office has been in constant communication with our department and assisting with the investigation.

“At this time, we believe that the death of Mr. Saunders Sr. is an isolated incident. We also believe that the person that caused the death of Mr. Saunders Sr. is in custody. This is a tragic situation, but I want to assure the community that they are safe and the person involved is no longer a danger to the public” said Chief Brian Saterfield.

The Crawford County Prosecutor’s office will be making the determination of criminal charges that will be filed in conjunction with this investigation early next week.
