Volunteers wanted to help new businesses SCORE

Looking to open a new business, but don’t know where to start?

SCORE is a free and confidential business mentoring program which helps entrepreneurs.

“The American dream for many people is owning their own business.” SCORE Small Business Mentor Neil Hamilton told Galion Betterment Commission members during a presentation Monday. “We would like to help people realize that dream.”

SCORE is seeking volunteers in Crawford County that have business experience.

“We are seeking new members here,” Hamilton said. “We currently have no members in Crawford County. We are looking for people who have business experience. Not all of our members have experience in these areas, we all have varied backgrounds.”

Score says the younger generation has more experience with the online world.

“Most of our volunteers who donate their time are in their upper 70s and 80s.” Hamilton said, “We also have online mentoring on the SCORE website. This is where younger people can come in and help. The older people we have are unfamiliar with Twitter and Facebook.”

The North Central Ohio SCORE organization reaches Crawford, Morrow, Richland, Knox and Ashland counties.

“We are a non-profit organization and we are all volunteers.” Hamilton said, “We have 11,000 members nationwide. We helped 56,000 businesses start up last year throughout the country. In our chapter alone, we helped 203 new businesses last year.”

Hamilton said his group can help a variety of new business.

“If you can’t get your business to grow,” Hamilton said, “They can come see us and we can mentor them. It’s not a one-shot deal, we will walk with them as long as they want us to help.”
