The Buckeye Central Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at Buckeye Central Local School.

The Class of 1965 toured the building on Saturday, August 22, 2015. A donation was made from the class to the art department, FCS, 8th grade Washington D.C. trip and the band.

Board Committee Reports:

Financial – Mrs. McDougal met with Mrs. Ackerman to review the past month’s financials. They reviewed the permanent appropriations for the current fiscal year (FY2016).

Legislative – No Report.

Student Achievement – No Report

Policy – Mr. Robinson will be meeting with Ed Swartz, NEOLA representative, to review necessary and suggested changes in policy for this upcoming school year. Mr. Robinson will meet with the Board Policy Committee members to review policy following this initial meeting.

Financial Report:

Financial reports were read and approved

Bills approved as submitted

The appropriations for FY 16 have been set. These amounts are very close to last year’s totals and will be monitored for needed changes throughout the fiscal year. The 2nd half real estate dollars were received this month from Crawford and Seneca Counties with the receipts being close to anticipated amounts. The Five Year Forecast is being prepared for the October meeting.

Superintendent’s Report and Discussions:

Mr. Robinson introduced Scott Carbary, Energy Service Advisor, and Teri Lease, Communications Specialist, from North Central Electric Cooperative, Inc. Mr. Carbary and Ms. Lease presented the Board members a $7500 check through a grant from North Central Electric Cooperative, Inc. and Buckeye Power. The grant was made possible and awarded to the district for the recent lighting retrofit project in the multipurpose room and two gymnasiums. Mr. Robinson and the Board thanked Mr. Carbary, Ms. Lease and everyone involved in making this grant possible. Mr. Robinson extended a special thanks to Jarrod Clady, Maintenance Supervisor, for finding the grant opportunity and following through with the application process. It was noted that his diligent work truly enabled this occasion for the district. Other school districts and businesses are currently reviewing this grant possibility due to Buckeye Central Schools pioneering process to earn the award.

Mr. Robinson extended a heartfelt thank you to Tom McKean for his hard work with the stadium concrete projects the past two summers. His leadership, skills and commitment to Buckeye Central Local Schools are COMMENDED! A thank you was also extended to the many community and staff volunteers who assisted with both projects.

Mr. Robinson reported that it had been a smooth opening of the 2015-2016 school year due to the focused work and commitment of the teachers, support staff, students, parents, and community members. He noted that the teamwork within the district allows Buckeye Central Schools to function at the highest levels in every area.

Building/Departmental Reports:

Written reports from the building principals and department supervisors were provided to the Board members. These one-page reports list and explain the many areas addressed within the building, grounds, or department during the immediate past month. This activity enables the Board members to stay up-to-date on the many happenings within the district on a regular basis.

Building use form for the Class of 1980 to use the back corner of the stadium parking lot on September 25 with Rhonda (House) Vondriska in charge

Building use form for the Boys Scouts of America, Heart of Ohio Council, to use the Café on September 22, 2015 with Chad Schnitzler in charge

Building use form for New Washington High School Class of 1955 for a building tour on August 22 with Connie Kehres in charge

Building Use form for the BC Football Team to use the Café or Multi-Purpose room every Thursday during football season with Ann Durnwald in charge

SPARC Career Coach for two days per week as per FY2016 Agreement of Services

2015 FFA National Convention trip to Lousville, KY

Resignation for Cindy Alt, Food Service Worker, effective September 2, 2015

New Business:

Mrs. McDougal provided an update on the Leader In Me initiative being studied for implementation at Buckeye Central Schools. The “Leader In Me” Committee met after school prior to the Board meeting and had discussed many topics related to the initiative. It was noted that the Board, administration, teachers, and parent representatives are excited that the program is being studied and discussed. It is based upon Dr. Covey’s, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and brings core leadership skills to our students and school community.

Executive Session:

The board went into executive session at 6:50 p.m. for matters required to be kept confidential by federal or state statutes. The executive session adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

The Buckeye Central Board of Education will hold the next monthly board meeting 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at Buckeye Central Local School, 938 South Kibler Street, New Washington, in the Multi-Purpose Room.
