GHS choir members shine at district competition

GALION — Members of the Galion High School Choir and Showtunes show choir participated in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District Solo and Ensemble Contests at Marion Harding in January.

Thirty-eight students competed in a 15 events, earning 12 “Superior” and three “Excellent” ratings.

Eight choir members entered the solo portion of the contest and performed well.

Farrah Gregg (Class A), Marissa Breinich (Class B) and Anna Court, Drew Owens, Katie Baughn and Orchid Parsons (Class C) all received “Superior” ratings for their solo performances.

Saundra Davis (Class B) and Elizabeth Harris (Class C) each received “Excellent” ratings.

Seven ensemble groups competed in the event and earned high marks from the judges.

The Galion Chamber Ensemble and Galion Men’s Ensemble each received “Superior” ratings in Class A competitions.

Members of the Chamber Ensemble included Farrah Gregg, Katie Baughn, Keaton Durbin, Zoe Braen, Marissa Breinich, Elizabeth Harris, Gabby Moreth, Rachel Jarvis, Gabby Akers, Logan Gregg, Paige Reagan, Autumn Barone, Alex Eckert, Connor Moreton, Caleb Strack, Clay Karnes, Max Papenhausen, Drew Owens, Collin Bowser, Brodie Cooper, Colin McCullough and Lucas Conner.

Members of the Galion Men’s Ensemble included Connor Moreton, Caleb Strack, Clay Karnes, Max Papenhausen, Drew Owens, Collin Bowser, Brodie Cooper, Colin McCullough and Lucas Conner.

“I am extremely proud of my students,” said director of choirs Rick Walker. “They worked very hard and put in many hours during and after school preparing for this event, and represented the Galion Choral Program and Galion City School District extremely well!”

The Galion Mixed Ensemble One, Galion Mixed Ensemble Two and Galion Women’s Ensemble Two competed in Class B, with each receiving “Superior” ratings.

Members of the Mixed Ensemble One included Mady Lawson, Marissa Breinich, Abby Barre, Rachel Jarvis, Ashley Dunlap, Autumn Barone, Connor Moreton, Max Papenhausen, Collin Bowser and Colin McCullough.

Mixed Ensemble Two members are Farrah Gregg, Keaton Durbin, Kiana Moulton, Logan Gregg, Allison Bauer, Megan Kostelnik, Clay Karnes, Drew Owens, Caleb Strack, Brodie Cooper and Lucas Conner.

Elizabeth Harris, Keaton Durbin, Zoe Braen, Logan Gregg, Gabby Akers, Megan Kostelnik, Allison Bauer, Autumn Barone and Ashley Dunlap competed as the Women’s Ensemble Two.

In Class C competition, the Galion Women’s Ensemble Three, made up of Elli Chandler, Camryn Rupert, Abby Foust, Kiersten Gifford, Natalie Conkel, Kaila Davis, Anna Court, Saundra Davis and Julia Williams received a “Superior” rating.

Farrah Gregg, Katie Baughn, Marissa Breinich, Kiana Moulton, Mady Lawson, Paige Reagan, and Alex Eckert, all members of Galion Women’s Ensemble One, received an “Excellent” rating in Class B.

“I am incredibly proud of all the students who took on the extra work and time to prepare for this competition,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “Mr. Walker does a fantastic job working with our students, and the results are clear with their performances in this incredibly difficult competition.”
