COLUMBUS — The Northmor Lady Golden Knights had themselves a day last Thursday Feb. 23 at High Performance Lanes (HPL) Bowling Center in Columbus. Northmor’s girls bowling squad made the trip south to compete in Division II districts bowling competition with hopes of a state bid.

Northmor finished third overall in the district meet and became last team to qualify for the state meet, despite a 14-6 regular season record.

As a team, the Golden Knights bowled games of 788, 711 and 861 for a total of 2,360 heading into the six-game Baker series. In the Baker series, Northmor bowled games of 155, 175, 162, 177, 164 and 183 for a total of 1,016. Their combined score of 3,376 was good enough to get them along to the state championships, outlasting fourth place Fredericktown by 174 pins.

“After missing qualifying for state last year by just nine pins, it felt good to qualify by such a large margin this year,” said Northmor bowling coach Russ Montgomery. “I am proud of my bowlers and I am excited to see what they can do against the type of competition that they will see on Friday.”

It is especially exciting and rewarding for the three seniors on the Knights’ squad.

“I have been bowling for four years now and we almost went to state last yea. We were so close,” says Caitlin Adkins. “I was even closer to qualifying as an individua.I only missed (that) by seven pins.”

Peyton Vollmer claims, “I am just excited that we advanced out of districts and to compete in state on Friday.” Vollmer is also a four-year bowler for coach Montgomery.

“I think that it is crazy how much, in four years, everyone has improved!” said senior Shelbey Lilly. “I went from a 101 average my freshman year to a 161 average now.”

Lilly had the second highest score in the sectional tournament and eighth highest series in the district event, as she was the Knights’ top bowler with games of 162, 159 and 207 for a three-game series total of 528.

Other series scores for the Knights were: Adkins, 474; Sara Drumm, 451; Chloe Meier, 445; Alexis Yarnell, 276 (first two games); and Samantha Grogg, 186 (third game).

The state championships is at Waynes Webb’s Columbus Bowl on Friday March 3, starting at approximately 10 a.m.
