Galion back to state

For the second time in three days, Carter Keinath left a trail of frustrated Fremont batters Friday night in Galion.

The southpaw struck out 11 batters in a complete game effort to lead the local Little League 12U All-Stars to a 16-3 District Final win over Fremont.

This is the team’s fourth straight district title.

With the win, Galion advances to the Little League state tournament in Painesville on 2 p.m. July 26 game against a team to be determined.

”This group has played so much together in the last four years,“ coach Jason McMullen said. “They don’t get rattled.”

Galion opened the scoring early.

After Caden Armstrong opened the game with a walk, second baseman Matthew McMullen promptly deposited a Fremont pitch over the left-field wall to give Galion a 2-0 lead.

It was Matthew’s first Little League home run.

“It was a 3-2 pitch that came down the middle,” he said. “(As a team), we practiced hard. It was a team effort, not just about one player.’

“We talked before the game about setting the tone in the first inning,” Jason added.

They did just that, scoring three in the first, one in the second, five in the fourth and seven in the sixth inning.

Eight of the nine Galion starters reached base at least twice.

Keinath had four hits and Troy Manring and Seth Shumate added home runs in the seventh inning for Galion.

Keinath’s performance on the mound followed 2 1/3 scoreless innings during the team’s 10-0 win over Fremont on Wednesday.

He said Friday night marked his second complete game in his career.

”It helped knowing their weaknesses, ” Keinath said. “It’s about consistently throwing strikes and hoping for the best.”

Keinath and his teammates did just that on Friday.
