On June 14. Galion City Council approved legislation (Ord. 2016-40) to modify the staffing ordinance for employees in that department.

Currently, the staff includes up to four linemen and up to two apprentices. They install and maintain electrical power lines, transformers and other related equipment.

The proposal is to change those position titles, creating up to six “line maintenance” personnel. The change would not add additional employees, but change the title in order to fill vacant positions easier. Unskilled applicants will start at a more entry level and go through the lineman training.

“We’re starting at the ground then working up,” Electric Superintendent Tony Slone explained.

This is a new approach for meeting long-term and short-term staffing in the department, which currently needs two additional employees. The city had already increased lineman pay in 2014 in order to be more competitive with municipal electric departments of similar size.
