Road construction updates

June 13, 2014

A progress meeting was held recently for ODOT’s widening project of State Route 598/61. Karvo Paving, the project contractor, was set to begin adding the cement stabilizer to the west lane on Friday if the weather held. Crews did begin pouring yesterday.

The Hesby Drive project is slightly ahead of schedule. The contractor, Underground Utilities, is currently laying pipe for the storm and sanitary sewers. The entrances to the new road will be at Bucyrus Road on the south end and the Galion City Schools campus on the north. Heise Park Lane will be extended west to connect with the road.

Also, the city confirmed that the SR 598 bridge will not be closed until the south end of the widening project is completed. The bridge closure is still set for mid-July and will last approximately 90 days.

“We hope to have Hesby Drive completed enough to use as a detour while the bridge is out,” Mayor Tom O’Leary recapped earlier this week. “In the long term, it will provide a second access point to the schools for both drivers and walkers.”
