The Galion High School varsity softball team dropped its first two games of the season this week. On Monday, they travelled to Marion County where they were run-ruled River Valley 12-2. Wednesday in Tigertown, they fell to the visiting Lady Golden Knights of Northmor, 14-8.
In the season-opener at River Valley, the Lady Orange-and-Blue scored only solo tallies in the top of the third and fourth innings. While in the field on defense, they watched as the Lady Vikings scored four times in the bottom of the first, twice in the second, once in both the third and fourth frames, before finishing things with another four-run outburst in the fifth.
Offensive for the locals, Jaime Ehrman jacked a pair of doubles, Julie Noonan belted a two-bagger, and Calli Bauer connected for a single.
Bauer pitched, yielding 7 hits, striking out 2 and issuing a free pass. She was the victim of shoddy defensive play as Galion committed 6 errors.
In Wednesday’s loss to Northmor, the Lady Orange-and-Blue jumped out to a 4-0 lead via a run in the bottom of the first and three more in the second. Late in the game, the hosts took an 8-5 advantage into the seventh, before the visitors amped up their offense and exploded for 9 runs — the final 9 of the day.
Maddy Garverick carried the big stick at the plate for Galion, cranked out a triple, double and single and driving in 3 runs. Calli Bauer was right behind with 2 doubles and a one-bagger and a pair of ribbies.Also: Jacie Ehrman and Jaime Ehrman contributed 2 singles each, to go with base hits by Tori Kirian, Shawntel McIe and Julie Noonan.
Garverick and Noonan pitched for Galion, pairing up to allow 11 hits and 5 bases on balls. In addition, 6 players combined to commit 8 errors.
