COLUMBUS — Northmor 145-pound senior Jamie Baldridge made it through the first two rounds of the Division III state wrestling tournament unscathed. Baldridge, who sports a 50-2 record, pinned Beechwood’s Anthony Walden (34-9) at 1:48 in a first-round match Thursday afternoon, and then decisioned Nick Vestal (47-6) of Dayton Christian by a 4-3 count in the quarterfinals Friday morning.

Baldridge will go toe-to-toe with Waynedale’s Reid Stanley (49-2) in Friday night’s semifinals. A win in that match and the Black-and-Gold’s standout will move on to Saturday night’s state championship bout.

Baldridge’s teammate — junior Kyle Johnson (12-5) — was eliminated from the tournament in Thursday’s action. The 195-pounder was pinned by Willard’s Moises Lopez (38-6) at 3:17 in the first round. Kyle Dieringer (43-8) of Versailles then beat Johnson 7-2 in the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

Galion 220-pound junior Deaken McCoy won his opening-round match-up Thursday before falling in his Division II second-round match Friday morning. On Thursday, McCoy (41-9) outscored Mason Hilling (34-8) of Peninsula Woodridge 11-5. In Friday’s quarterfinals, McCoy lost a hard-fought battle to Troy Caldwell (46-2) of Jonathan Alder by a 3-1 score. The defeat dropped McCoy — who was a state-qualifier a year ago as a sophomore — to the loser’s bracket where he was to square off with Kordell Chaney (38-11) of Sandusky Perkins on Friday. Caldwell was slated to face Upper Sandusky’s Tylor Pritchard (30-2) in the semifinals.
