12 local swimmers compete at YMCA zone meet

BOWLING GREEN — One dozen mem­bers of the Galion Com­mu­nity Cen­ter YMCA Dol­phins swim team com­peted in the Great Lakes YMCA Zone Cham­pi­onships here last weekend.

The zone meet con­sisted of qual­i­fy­ing swim­mers from five states — Ohio, Indi­ana, Ken­tucky, Michi­gan and West Virginia.

Those who com­peted in the meet for the Dol­phins were Sarah Camp­bell, Chloe Car­man, Sam DeN­ero, Zane Ekin, Taryn Gath­right, Jil­lianne Gregg, Jake John­son, Kaleb John­son, Con­nor Kempf, Pierce Kras­sow, Logan Pfeifer and Bri­anna Wallis,

In the 15-and-older divi­sion, DeN­ero, Kaleb John­son, Kempf and Pfeifer fin­ished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.85.

DeN­ero, Ekin, John­son and Pfeifer placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:21.24.

Ekin, John­son, Kempf and Pfeifer were 10th in the 200 med­ley relay at 1:41.82. They qual­i­fied for the nation­als ear­lier in the season.

Indi­vid­u­ally, John­son was fourth in the 200 breast, eighth in the 200 indi­vid­ual med­ley, eighth in the 100 breast, 17th in the 50 fly, and 22nd in the 100 fly.

Pfeifer took fourth in the 100 free and sev­enth in the 50 free.

Ekin was 30th in the 100 fly and 37th in the 50 fly.

Kempf gar­nered 23rd place in the 100 back and 24th in the 50 back.

DeN­ero was 18th in the 50 free.

Gath­right was 24th in the 100 breast.

Jake John­son fin­ished sev­enth in the 100 breast and 32nd in the 50 fly in 13–14-year-old boys.

In 11–12 girls, the 200 freestyle relay quar­tet of Car­man, Gregg, Kras­sow and Wal­lis was 15th, while Car­man, Camp­bell, Gregg and Kras­sow were 21st in the 200 med­ley relay.

Also, Wal­lis was 27th in the 50 back and 43rd in the 50 free.

Gregg took 13th in the 50 free.

Kras­sow was 36th in the 50 back.

Rep­re­sent­ing Galion in the national meet — to be held early April in Greens­boro, North Car­olina — will be DeN­ero, 50 free; Gath­right, 100 breast; Kaleb John­son, 100 breast; plus Pfeifer in the 50 free and 100 free.

The 15-and-over 200 med­ley relay squad (Ekin, John­son, Kempf and Pfeifer), the 200 freestyle relay quar­tet (DeN­ero, Ekin, Kempf and Pfeifer), along with the 400 med­ley relay crew (Ekin, John­son, Kempf and Pfeifer) will also compete.

To help the fam­i­lies with the cost of trav­el­ing to Greens­boro, a fundraiser is planned for March 21st and 26th at Pizza Hut in Galion from 5–8 p.m. There will be a buf­fet and drink for $8.50 a per­son, and a por­tion of each buf­fet sale will be donated to the local nation­als squad. Team mem­bers will be present to meet and greet diners.
