The Emma Hostetler-led Lady Whippets of Shelby High School gunned down the Galion Lady Tigers 69–54 Thursday night in what was the final home game of the season for the Orange-and-Blue.
Hostetler — a four-year starter and an All-Ohioan — scored a game-high 17 points and dealt out 8 assists for the visitors who bumped their record up to 16–3.
In losing, the Lady Tigers tumble to 7–13. The game was of the non-conference variety.
Shelby had a 17–6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Orange-and-Blue came back with a vengeance in the first 3:18 of the second period reeling of an 11–0 run to tie things up. Peyton Beachy and Kelly Mann had a pair of field goals apiece in the blitz, with the latter being on the receiving end of passes from the former on her two.
The remainder of the frame belonged to the visitors though, as they finished the half with a 16–4 spree to go into halftime on top, 33–21.
Any hopes the Lady Tigers had of mounting a second-half comeback were squashed in the third frame as the winners outscored them 22–11 to take a 23-point cushion into the last stanza.
The Lady Whippets led by as many as 30 points early in the final eight minutes.
Statistically, Galion was 22-for-57 on field goal attempts (38 percent) and only 9-for-21 on foul shots. Shelby converted 26-of-51 shots (51 percent) and 13-of-19 freebies. The visitors had a 25–21 rebounding edge and turned the ball over 20 times. The hosts had 19 miscues.
The only players to score for the locals were the five starters. Bailey Ruhe tied Hostetler for game scoring honors with 17 points. Beachy had 15, Man, 12; Ramonda Dorsey, 6; and Jordan Kuns, 4.
Taylor Goth (12 points) and Taylor Fulton (11) reached twin figures in the scorebook for the victors.
Junior varsity action had Galion winning 44–26. Kayla LaForest tallied a game-best dozen points for the winners and teammate Shelbie Schramek added 11.
Galion closes out the regular season next Tuesday at Crestline.
On Wednesday, February 20, the Lady Orange-and-Blue travel to Ontario High School to play Lexington in the first round of the sectional tournament. Game time is 7 p.m.
