This evening I attended the final Galion City Council Meeting for 2012. While those in attendance expected to see due diligence by existing Council Members as we transition from a Charter Based form of Government to a Mayor-Council form of government, we witnessed the opposite. You will read (or have read) in the paper that Councilperson Wade made a motion to establish a working committee of the three existing council members and three community members to develop a recommendation to the larger council for setting wages for certain positions described in the amended charter. The motion died for lack of second. Several other council members asserted that they could not act because they took an oath to uphold the charter and one even stated that they had no legal standing. They could not be more wrong. The Constitution of the State of Ohio allows either the people or the legislative authority to place charter amendments on the ballot for voter’s approval or rejection. That is exactly what was done, the charter was amended! The same oath they took to uphold the original charter compels their action now. Call your councilman and keep calling until they affirm their obligation and perform the due diligence expected. Then come to the next council meeting in January and hold them responsible.
