Galion used a trio of double digit scorers to help end a seven-game losing skid last Saturday afternoon defeating Lucas 53–40 in North Central Conference girls’ basketball action at the high school.
The win put the Orange-and-Blue at 6–12 overall and 3–9 in the conference.
The Lady Tigers scored the first points of the game taking an early 2–0 lead, they would go ice cold after for much of the first quarter as the Lady Cubs would build an 8–2 advantage,
Galion would start to find some offensive rhythm late in the first quarter though, going on a 6–2 run over the last three-and-a-half minutes to end the stanza down by just two.
Lucas’s Kate Redding scored eight of her team’s 10 points during the opening frame, with six coming on three-point shots.
The Lady Tigers head coach Jen Rich said her team knew the Lady Cubs big scorer is usually Jackie Sauder, so they game planned to limit her effectives.
“But Redding totally picked it up and I didn’t expect that,” Rich said. “I absolutely didn’t expect her to shoot from three-point land. That was not scouted. We just thought Redding would stay in the paint with the ball, and boy was I wrong.”
Lucas pushed its lead to 12–8 with an early basket from Redding in the second period. Galion’s Peyton Beachy answered right back with a three-point bomb cutting the lead to one.
The Lady Tigers closed the half with an 11–6 to put them up by four points at intermission.
During the third quarter Galion turned offensively to 6’4” senior post Sam Hamar. She scored eight points during the stanza, giving the locals a lead of as many as 11 points.
A pair of field goals by Lucas during the quarter’s last minute cut the gap down to 37–30.
Galion won the final eight minutes 16–10 to lock up the victory.
“It feels so good to be back on the winning side,” stated Rich. “I also think it gave the girls a confidence boost heading into tournament time.”
Galion had eight girls play and all eight girls scored for the locals. Hamar led the way with 14 points with Beachy tossed in 13 markers and Romanda Dorsey added 11 tallies.
Kelly Mann added 6 points while pulling down 7 rebounds and dishing out 7 assists.
Hannah Ruhe added 4 points, while Jordan Kuns and Bailey Ruhe tacked on a field goal each and Kali Heydinger contributed a free throw.
Redding popped in a game-high 21 markers for the visitors.
In the jayvee game the Lady Tigers came away with a 43–21 victory with both Raven Crawford and Shelbie Schramek scoring 10 points in the winning effort.
